Python Search & Sorting: Trace the Required Algorithms
GATE 2027 DA core: linear/binary search, selection/bubble/insertion sort, mergesort and quicksort
“Implement and trace the named DA search and sorting methods in Python.”
1.Prerequisites and search contracts
§ 1.1.Prerequisites: Python loops, lists, and index arithmetic; see the first two lessons in this module if needed. This lesson complements the analysis in [Algorithms](/notes/algorithms/divide-and-conquer-and-sorting).
Linear search checks each value and is correct on arbitrary input. Binary search repeatedly discards half the candidate interval, but it is valid only when the sequence is sorted under the same ordering used by the search.
Selection sort places the next minimum; bubble sort moves adjacent out-of-order values; insertion sort inserts the next item into an already sorted prefix. Mergesort recursively sorts halves and merges; quicksort partitions around a pivot. The syllabus names these algorithms, so the student must trace implementations and not only recognize their names.
Worked trace: insertion sort
[5, 2, 4, 1] with insertion sort.The first element is already a sorted prefix.
Shift 5 right and insert 2: [2, 5, 4, 1].
Shift 5 right and insert 4: [2, 4, 5, 1].
Shift 5, 4, and 2 right; result [1, 2, 4, 5].
Algorithm checks
What precondition is required for the binary-search implementation above?
How many comparisons does linear search use for an absent target in a 7-element list?
One-minute revision
“Check each algorithm's precondition, invariant, and worst-case bound separately.”
- •Linear search O(n); binary search O(log n) on sorted input
- •Quadratic elementary sorts O(n²) worst case
- •Merge sort O(n log n); common quicksort O(n²) worst case
- •Unsorted binary-search input
- •Off-by-one interval updates
- •Expected time is not worst-case time
- •State stability only when the code preserves equal-key order
